The streets surrounding UK’s campus are about to get a little bit busier, and not just because students are arriving soon.

Land transfers from a 2017 land swap agreement between UK + the city of Lexington are now beginning to take effect. Essentially, the city gave UK control of ~13.5 acres of “several important roads” — including Rose Street + Hilltop Avenue — in exchange for 250 acres near UK’s Coldstream Research Campus.

So, what does this mean for us? Time to start paying a little bit more attention when + where you’re parking near UK.

Major changes

  • As of Mon., Aug. 1, all on-street parking on Linden Walk, Gazette Avenue + Warren Court will now require a valid UK Permit. Monday-Thursday from 5 a.m.-3:30 p.m. the spots are reserved for Employee (E) permits, but any UK parking permit may use the spaces between 3:30-7:30 p.m. on those days. No permit is required after 3:30 p.m. on Friday or on the weekends.
  • Effective beginning Mon., Aug. 15, on-street parking on Rose Lane will become permit-controlled parking + require a valid R12 student residential permit while classes are in official session. Classes are in session for UK’s 2022-2023 school year from Mon., Aug. 22-Fri., May 5

This map shows the streets that will be switching to UK permit-controlled parking.

Be on the lookout

On-street paid parking spaces will transition from the city’s LexPark to UK’s Transportation Services on the following roads:

  • Martin Luther King Boulevard, between Avenue of Champions and East Maxwell
  • Lexington Avenue, between Avenue of Champions and East Maxwell
  • Press Avenue
  • Leader Avenue

Pro tip: The use of spaces will remain open to the public, but the change could mean different prices, signage + payment methods.

Keep an eye out, as new signage, parking stall + parking meter installation, and curb painting will begin in the coming weeks.
