Reviewing the best-selling candy in Lexington, Kentucky

Hey, y’all. Aaron here. 👋

Since I’ve been writing this newsletter, you’ve probably learned a few things about me by now — I love basketball, the Red River Gorge, and hanging with my family.

But did you know I have a massive sweet tooth?

Since it’s Halloween week, I figured it was time to sample some of Lexington’s top-selling, locally-made candies.

But I couldn’t go on this journey alone. So I brought my 7-year-old son along to sample, review, and rank candies made in the Bluegrass.

  • Kid’s score: đŸ«đŸ«đŸ«
Bourbon balls | Ruth Hunt Candies, 213 Walton Ave. | Tourists love them — locals are indifferent
  • Aaron’s score: đŸ«đŸ«đŸ«
  • Kid’s score: đŸ«đŸ«
Blue Monday | Ruth Hunt Candies, 213 Walton Ave. | A candy that’s been made in Kentucky for almost 100 years — dark chocolate coating with a candy-cream center
  • Aaron’s score: đŸ«đŸ«
  • Kid’s score: đŸ«đŸ«đŸ«đŸ«đŸ«

The verdict

Winners:
  • Chocolate-covered caramels | This was the candy that received the highest combined score + I think is a sure-fire bet to satiate any sweet tooth.
  • Chocolate-covered potato chips | I gave this a perfect 5/5 due to its unique salty + sweet qualities. I thought this would be a good choice for a party — talk about a conversation starter. My son, however — was not impressed.

Resiliency, defense + a local Wildcat 🏀

UK Men’s Basketball Media Day 2022-2023

Coach Cal is looking to seniors Jacob Toppin + Oscar Tshiebwe to be leaders for his young guys. | Photos by LEXtoday
We attended UK’s annual media day event. Here’s what we learned:

1. There’s a local Wildcat on the team.
  • Brennan Canada is a 6-ft 5-in senior forward from Mt. Sterling, KY.
  • Quote: “He’s the kind of kid that can play four different positions,” said Coach Cal.
  • Need to know: This is Brennan’s last season. Look for him to make his mark down the stretch.
2. Eastern Kentucky’s resiliency is inspiring.
  • Coach Cal’s first comments were about this coal miner from Eastern Kentucky.
  • Quote: "[Miners] they go down together and they come up together. They hold each other accountable. That’s written on my team’s wall now,” said Coach Cal.
3. Shooting + defense
  • Look for CJ Frederick + Antonio Reeves to bring more perimeter shooting this year, something — some say — was missing from last year’s team.
  • Quote: “Legally, I have to play five players — that’s it. These young guys, if they don’t play defense, they don’t play,” said Coach Cal.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Aaron.

Editor’s pick: Taste-testing local candies and playing free pinball at The Burl might end up being the highlight of my Halloween season.

But I am also excited about our homemade costumes this year. We’re going to be a trio of wacky scientists — a chemist, a botanist, and a zoologist.
