Each year,Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday of January — today, Jan. 16. The theme for this year is “Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems,” according to The King Center — a nonprofit founded by MLK’s wife, Coretta Scott King, to continue Dr. King’s legacy.
If you have time to dedicate to our community, here are three local volunteer opportunities:
The Hope Center | The Hope Center’s volunteer team helps to rebuild lives on a daily basis — from serving 38,000+ hot meals a month to teaching career skills to its Recovery Clients.
Lexington Habitat for Humanity | Get hands-on by working on-site at one of this organization’s local construction projects. No experience is needed because you’ll be provided with the training + tools needed to make a difference.
God’s Pantry Food Bank | Volunteer your time to fight hunger in the Bluegrass by organizing the warehouse, managing collections, or stocking the pantry.
Don’t forget to head downtown for the annual celebration, which returns this afternoon after a two-year hiatus. See the schedule of events.
