Moving to a new city can be a little unnerving. However, those new to the Horse Capital of the World will feel right at home thanks to some welcoming and proud locals.

Introducing, Newcomers & Friends of Lexington.

We learned about Newcomers & Friends of Lexington from reader Kitty K., who joined the group after moving here from her native Greece seven years ago.

“For people who have just moved to a new city, it can be stressful, especially if they don’t know anyone. In this group, you can meet and make friends, and it’s a very welcoming space. All of the members have been there and started as newcomers,” Kitty said.

And while it started with the premise of being a haven for new Lexingtonians, it has since expanded and is now “a social club for new and established residents of the Bluegrass,” the website says.

Membership perks

Dues for the membership-driven nonprofit are $30 annually, running from April 1-March 30. Becoming a member gives you access to a wide variety of activities and groups.

“I Joined a book club immediately, made friends very quickly, got more involved, and now I’m in charge of the quarterly luncheons,” Kitty said.

Here’s a quick glance at some of the offerings —
  • Card games
  • Book clubs by genre
  • Walking group
  • Co-ed wine group
  • Monthly newsletter
  • Annual directory
Kitty says it best: “Newcomers & Friends of Lexington builds community and is a great outlet for meeting new people and making friends.”

If you’re interested in joining, consider perusing the Facebook page and emailing the board with any questions.

THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Molly.

Editor’s pick: Given that I follow a gluten-free diet, I don’t drink beer and usually stick to ciders or wine. I was super excited to learn that the Warehouse Block’s newest watering hole, Myriad Meadery, has announced its grand opening — Friday, Feb. 10. See you there?
