Celebrate Earth Day in Lexington

Today is Earth Day — an annual holiday celebrated by more than a billion people across 192 countries. This year’s campaign is “Our Power, Our Planet,” an initiative to triple clean energy output by 2030. To help you harness your personal planet power, EarthDay.org has a plethora of resources for you to get involved on local, national, and global levels. A few of our favorites include:
Interested in volunteering with a local environmental org in honor of Earth Day? Look no further than Lexington Parks and Recreation and Bluegrass Greensource.

Here are a few must-know facts about the history of Earth Day:
  • Senator Gaylord Nelson spearheaded the creation of Earth Day after witnessing an oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA. Under his leadership, the first Earth Day was in 1970.
  • The first Earth Day sparked an outpouring of environmental activism, and less than six months later, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Environmental Protection Agency were formed.
  • Earth Day went global in 1990.

  • If you’ve ever wanted a one-stop shop for burgers, popcorn chicken, and egg rolls, you’re in luck. West Coast fast-food chain Jack in the Box has announced it will be expanding across Lexington, with the goal of opening four to five around town in the next couple of years. (Lexington Herald-Leader)
  • Do-nut panica new bakery has just opened to meet your breakfast needs. Donut World, located at 1395 W. Main St., is bringing 22 flavors of donuts, as well as other breakfast classics like bagels + croissants to Meadowthorpe. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

  • Did you hear? Local bookshop SQecial Media is working on a new documentary, and they’re asking the public to get involved. If you’re an avid lover of the store + its history, you could play a part in the film by filling out this form before Friday, May 5.

  • UK women’s basketball, gymnastics, and volleyball will call Rupp Arena home for the 2023-2024 season. The change in venue comes as Memorial Coliseum undergoes an $82 million renovation that is expected to be ready by the fall 2024 semester. (UK Athletics)

  • Louisville-based Calhoun Construction has announced it will expand into Lexington. The company — known for its work at Churchill Downs and The Kentucky Center for the Arts — has begun work on its new building on 1708 Jaggie Fox Way and is expected to open this May. (The Lane Report)

  • After five years in the making, UK doctoral student Nigel Taylor has published his children’s book, “The Endless Possibilities of Nora and Vincent.” With support from UK alumni Bryant Billue and Chanel Friday, who illustrated and edited the story, respectively, the story follows two Black children as they discover various types of jobs. For those of you who may not know, April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and The Bluegrass Parkinson’s Alliance is hoping to educate the public about its programs and resources that can benefit those with Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

According to Executive Director Laura Saldato, exercise is key for people with movement disorders, which is why the organization hosts free classes with the help of neurologists for those suffering from PD + their caretakers including —

Mondays

Power for PD, 1882 Bellefonte Dr. | 1 p.m.
A group aerobic + physical therapy exercise class.

Tuesdays

Drums Alive!, 2351 Alumni Dr. | 2 + 3 p.m.
A music therapy class that combines movement and drums.

Wednesdays

Aquatics Class, 2050 Versailles Rd. | 2 p.m.
A low-impact workout that encourages movement without adding strain.

Thursdays

Tai Chi, 1882 Bellefonte Dr. | 1 p.m.
This mindful exercise class blends martial arts + breathing for some easy slow movement.
