Getting cool before back to school

On Wednesday, Aug. 16, thousands of kids around town will return to school with their backpacks and new-year jitters in tow. But before hopping on the sylla-bus, we’ve rounded up a few ways to get your kids excited for the Fall 2023 semester.

Events

Back to School “Sneaker Ball” | Saturday, Aug. 12 | 6-9 p.m. | Main Street Gym, 1321 W. Main St. | Join the African American Arts Association as they come together for a night of dancing, music, food, and more.

Poetry Under the Stars | Saturday, Aug. 12 | 6:30 p.m. | Gratz Park, 250 W. Third St. | Grab a blanket for this poetry open mic night hosted by the Lexington Youth Poetry Laureate Cohort.

Back to School Bash | Sunday, Aug. 13 | 11 a.m.-5p.m. | Jacobson Park, 4001 Athens Boonesboro Rd. | LGBTQIA+ youth and their parents are invited for a day of face painting, food, and meeting new friends.

Back to School Makers Market | Saturday, Sept. 9 | 11 a.m.-4 p.m. | Central Bank Center, 430 W. Vine St. | Students can come out to browse local goods, gifts for teachers, and gear for themselves.

  • We’ve got some sweet news. Vafa’s Cakery, who is known on social media for her elaborate dessert designs, will host a grand opening on Thursday, Aug. 17. Get your sweet tooth fix with muffins, cupcakes, cake pops, and more at 373 Virginia Ave. from 4:30-8:30 p.m.
Sports
  • Oscar Tshiebwe isn’t done with the Big Blue Nation just yet. The former Wildcat basketball star will host a youth basketball camp at Sports Center on Sunday, Aug. 27. While sign-ups have reached capacity, you can still join the waitlist for kids grades 1-8 to play alongside Oscar and other current players. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

  • Eat Good. Do Good. That’s the motto for the Lexington Humane Society’s (LHS) fundraiser that kicks off today. Head to any participating restaurants, bars, and other venues over the next few days, and 15-25% of sales will be donated to LHS.

  • The Living Arts & Sciences Center’s (LASC) newest exhibit is open. Now until Friday, Oct. 6, experience the “Future of Fashion” at this interactive gallery, which features designs from regional artists. Sashay over to LASC on Friday, Aug. 11 for the opening reception at 6 p.m.
Eat
  • La Folie, located at 111 Woodland Ave., has officially re-opened with a new menu. Enjoy French cuisine with appetizers such as escargot and main dishes like Duck a’La Orange Tuesday through Saturdays from 4-9 p.m.

  • Who doesn’t love waffles? Sweet Iron, District 7 Social Hall’s newest eatery, is slated to open mid-August, and will feature a European and regional waffle-inspired menu of classics. We’ll share more details as they become available.*
