We know the question on your mind, Lexingtonians — when’s it going to get cold? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for December, January, and February. While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what winter will bring.

Think cool. This winter, Lexington has a 33-50% chance of temperatures being higher than normal.

Typically in Lexington, December’s temperatures fluctuate between an average low of 31.5°F and an average high of 43.9°F, but expect to see more of those mid-40° days this year. December is also the month that sees the shortest days, with an average of 9h and 35min of daylight.
Onward to January
January has consistently been the coldest month of the year in Lexington, with an average low of 25.7°F and an average high of 39°F. If you’re a fan of snow, this is when you can start to look for accumulation. The most likely months for snowfall in Lexington are January-April.
Will February be freezing?
February trends similarly to January in terms of temperature, with an average low of 28.8°F and an average high of 43.5°F. If you’re over the cold by this point, here’s some good news. February is when Lexington starts to see longer days, averaging 10h and 49min of daylight.

Health
Fayette County Public Schools is reversing an early proposal that would have ended its nearly 50-year contract with the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. According to a spokesperson, the school board has decided to instead negotiate a one-year contract extension, which would go through June 2025.
Traffic
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet unveiled plans to construct a double-crossover diamond at the Leestown Road and New Circle Interchange — similar to the intersection design at Harrodsburg Road. Lane closures will begin today from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. until Saturday, Dec. 9 for signage work. (LEX18)

Looks like we’ll need to update our pickleball guide. Thanks to funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, the city cut the ribbon on brand new pickleball courts at Meadowbrook Park on Harvard Drive — the first of many expected to open throughout the city’s parks.
Regional
Blue Stallion Brewing Company + Apollo Pizza are joining forces to open one of the largest patios in Central Kentucky. When it opens in downtown Richmond next year, The Quarter will feature Blue Stallion beer, Apollo Pizza, House of ‘Cue, Holler Burger, and a second location of Corbin-based White Rabbit Records.
