If you know our newsletters, you know that you can count on us to keep your morning news unbiased and stress-free. As our company co-founder and CEO Ryan Johnston says, “We have chosen to cover the things that get us all excited and bring communities together, not push them further apart.”

It’s an election year, and we’re committed to maintaining our readers’ trust. Fun fact: We’ve turned down more than a million dollars in political ads since we first started — we’re that serious about our brand promise. We think reading about what’s going on in your city should be a positive experience, not something that rockets your blood pressure before you’ve even started your day.

In election years like 2024, advertisers move their money around — and those fluctuations impact businesses like ours who don’t accept political ad dollars.

That’s why we’re calling on our readers to give. Several of you have asked how you can support us, and we thought now would be as good a time as ever to introduce a new way for you to say, “thank you.” We have a goal to raise $8,000 over the next 10 days. This is the one time a year we’ll ask for contributions, and we’re calling on you to join in.

We curate local news. No matter which news outlet, community organization, small business, or reader breaks the story — the most positive local news and events worth your attention are curated into our daily newsletter. While our operations span multiple cities, our dedicated City Editors live, work, and play in Lexington, carrying out our mission to highlight the incredible small businesses, non-profits, and city programs you want to hear about. So far in 2024, we’ve delivered more than 344 events and 656 news stories to the people of Lexington — for free.

We impact readers’ lives. You may have gotten something out of being subscribed to LEXtoday, like finding that life-changing concert in our Events section. Summer’s almost here and Lexington is so ready. From live music and Memorial Day celebrations to hiking and festivals, summer is when the Horse Capital of the World comes alive.

Get ready to get outside with this guide featuring 28 summer events — including ideas for the Fourth of July — happening between May and August.

Concerts and live music

Tahlsound Concert Series, Last Sunday of every month, April-September, Oleika Temple Great Lawn
End those warm summer weekends with live music from regional musicians, food + drink vendors, and community-focused good vibes at this monthly series.

Big Band & Jazz, Every Tuesday, May 14 -Aug. 13, Moondance Amphitheare + Ecton Park
What could be better than a free concert? A free concert in the park with your neighbors. Grab a chair, pack a picnic, and let the sweet sounds of jazz take you away.

Family-friendly

Summer Nights in Suburbia, Fridays until Sept. 13, Moondance Amphitheater
The concert series runs the musical gamut + brings a surprise to each show featuring indie rock, blues, folk artists, and more. Gates open as early as 5:30 p.m.

Ballet Under the Stars, July 31-Aug. 4, Woodland Park
Celebrate the art of dance under the moonlight with the Kentucky Ballet Theatre. This year’s pre-show is A Tribute to Taylor Swift, then professional dancers take to the stage at 9 p.m.

Foodies

Bluegrass BBQ Festival, May 17-18, Moondance Amphitheatre
You’ll likely get a whiff of the area’s best smoked meats and eats even before arriving at Moondance. Get fired up by hitting up spots like My Hammy Vice and Kentucky Q for all your grilled goods, and stay for the live music and vendors.

Black Restaurant Week, June 17-23, Various locations
Black-owned restaurants will feature one-of-a-kind, off-menu entrees for $12. Previous options included Trinidadian nachos from Jack’s Sandbar and Grill.
