🎤 LEX drop the mic

A packed audience at the Kenwick Table look on as a speaker stands at the microphone reading from a piece of paper.

You already know this is Lexington Poetry Month, but have you noticed the open mics popping up like June flowers? To make the most of this magical month, here are five mics open to you:

Poetry at the Table, Kenwick Table
Perhaps the brightest star in LEX’s open mic sky, this monthly installation always attracts a crowd thanks to big-name headliners like George Ella Lyon. Pro tip: If you get stage fright, this is the perfect mic for spectating and maybe even getting an autograph. Meets the first Wednesday of the month — that’s tonight. Sign-ups start at 5:30 p.m.

Comedy Open Mic, Ethereal Public House
Every Thursday night at 8 p.m. you’ve got the chance to strut your stuff at this comedy classroom, or laugh along with local comics as they hone their craft. Pro tip: Leave the kids at home, with drink specials and loose lips, things could get wild.

Multifarious Open Mic, Blue Stallion Brewing Company
Starting Monday, June 16 at 6 p.m. this is the latest arrival to LEX’s open mic scene. Become a part of something fresh by attending the first-ever performance of this brand new open mic mixing poetry and (some) music — planned to recur monthly.

News Notes

Closed

If you tried getting Chick-fil-A in Hamburg this weekend you probably saw a hole in the ground where your favorite fast casual chicken chain previously stood. The demolition is for a remodel — the location is expected to be back in business this fall. (WKYT)

Concert

You’ll want to ride your bicycle to the Lexington Opera House Saturday, Aug. 16 for “One Night of Queen” performed by Gary Mullen & The Works. Presales begin tomorrow, June 5 at 10 a.m. for this show guaranteed to rock you — stomp, stomp, clap.

Kids

Feed your kid’s brain (and their tummies) at this year’s Summer at the Library. Lunch and snacks are available five days a week thanks to Fayette County Public Schools. Plus, students ride LexTran for free when they present their student success card.

Edu

Applications for the Kentucky Arts Council’s Teaching Art Together Grant close Thursday, July 31. Apply today for the chance to collaborate with a professional artist by inviting them into the classroom.

Outdoors

Join the Urban Forest Initiative Saturday, June 21 at 9 a.m. when TreeCorps comes to African Cemetery No. 2. Beautify LEX and preserve history by planting trees and removing invasive species.

State

As of June 1, THC drinks are no longer for sale in bars in Kentucky. However, these beverages can still be sold in liquor stores or other businesses with packaged liquor licenses. See Cornbread Hemp co-founder James Higdon explain the difference. (WLKY)

Seasonal

Summer’s more fun when you can actually hear it. Whether it’s ocean waves or outdoor movies, get back in the moment with this crowd-favorite hearing aid that packs dual processing tech for the ultimate clarity. Bonus: The 45-day trial means no risk if you’re not into it.*

Pets

Sundays For Dogs began when a veterinarian couldn’t find food she trusted for her own dog — so she made one. Try real, clean dog food for 50% off.*

Post of the Day

Ready to meet your new best friend? Take a trip to Old Friends Equine where you can mix and mingle with horses like the 31-year-old Miss du Bois, above. Known as horse racing’s “living history museum,” this farm is home to retired Triple Crown race winners and Breeder’s Cup World Champions. Come say hay.

The Buy

A really good electric bikini trimmer. Its stainless steel ceramic blades provide a smooth shave free of nicks, razor burn, and ingrown hairs. Bonus: It’s waterproof + boasts up to five hours of battery life.
