News Notes

Development

Lexington is testing a new street art program that could help slow traffic in busy pedestrian areas. The initiative is being tested on Shropshire Avenue, where chalk and other temporary drawings showed major improvements for Streetfest this past May. Now, the city is collaborating with artists to create semi-permanent art. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

Open

Kneading more sourdough in your life? Meet Bread and Roses Bakery, an offshoot of Kentucky Native Cafe, from the owners of Michler’s Florist. Offering fresh breads and pastries, the bakery has opened to a warm welcome from the community and hopes to expand its current limited hours soon. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

Annouced

“The enforcement action is on site at the work zone,” said Major Eric Walker of Kentucky State Police, talking about a new law that can fine Kentucky drivers $500 if they speed through construction sites. “We’ve got to slow them down so that our workers at the work zones are safe.” (LEX 18)

Cause

A Kentucky mother and her two children are all in need of kidney transplants. Amanda Liles, Hunter Collins, and Katelyn Massie all have Alport Syndrome — a rare disease that causes declining kidney function. If you think you may be a match, contact UK HealthCare. (Lexington Herald-Leader)
Is anyone watching “The Summer I Turned Pretty?” The romantic drama has been trending this year, and now the Horse Capital of the World has its own take on proceedings — “The Summer Lexington turned 250.”

Seasonal

Move aside, tomatoes, it’s corn season now. The folks at Evans Orchard are slinging fresh cobs starting at $4 for a half-dozen. Whether you grill them, boil them, or turn them into Mexican street corn, local produce is the way to go.
