Lexington’s top sports teams explained
No matter who is wearing blue + white, they always give us something to cheer about. | Photo by Chet White, UK Athletics
Whether you’re a sports fanatic or just look good in blue, when it comes to sports, Lexington has no shortage of teams to support. Our city is home to some of the most loyal fans — and flamable couches — in the country.

A sea of blue. Big Blue Nation. There’s a reason they say we bleed blue, and our beloved basketball team is a big part of it. After 15 years under John Calipari’s leadership, Head Coach (and Wildcat alum) Mark Pope is beginning his second season of continuing UK basketball’s proud tradition.
Major accomplishments:
In 2024, UK was the all-time No. 1 team for the past 75 years of the AP Top 25 poll

I’ll admit it — I had no idea what Fat Bear Week was until this year. If you’re in the same boat, here’s the gist: it’s a tournament at Katmai National Park in Alaska where the brown bears of Brooks River compete for the crown of “fattest bear” as they bulk up for hibernation.
Or, as the New York Times put it: “All of the Bears Were Fat, but Chunk Was the Fattest of All.”
Consider me hooked — I’ll definitely be tuning in next year.
