Lexington’s hot chocolate awards

The Greenery holiday drink
The Greenery’s “Candy Cane Crunch” holiday special tastes just as good without the espresso. | Photo by LEXtoday
During Lexington’s bitter cold snap this past weekend, Editor Alexis was on a mission to try some of the city’s best cups of hot chocolate. Findings show that you can kick a hot chocolate craving at just about any of Lexington’s coffee shops, but here are some standouts. Pro tip: I asked for all of my beverages to be made in a “for-here” mug.

Best dressed

The Greenery: Coffee + Social Space, 206 W. Main St.
This downtown cafe always has creative seasonal specials, so when I saw “Candy Cane Crunch,” I knew it would be a hit. This drink features dark chocolate, peppermint, and crushed candy on top. Pro tip: This drink originally comes with espresso, but I removed it.

The fudgiest of them all

Chocolate Holler, 101 W. Loudon Ave. Ste. 162
A longtime Lexington favorite, this spot now located in Greyline Station offers multiple flavors of hot + iced chocolates, sipping chocolates, and a full coffee bar. I went with a classic hot chocolate, but consider upgrading to a sipping chocolate for a rich drink made from melted chocolate.

News Notes

Open

Donut World on West Main Street is back open after being shut down twice in recent weeks by the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. The closures stemmed from repeated access violations, but the shop was cleared to reopen following a successful inspection on Saturday, Dec. 13. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

Kids

The Fayette Education Foundation will pause Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Fayette County after the Jan. 20-26 mailing due to funding challenges. Nearly 8,000 enrolled families will receive January books while leaders seek new funding to restore the program. (ABC 36)

Cause

The Lexington Fire Department will be distributing toys from their 96th annual toy drive this Saturday, and they are currently seeking final donations. The fire department is still thousands of toys shy of their 10,000 toy goal. Anyone interested in helping bridge the gap can drop off a toy at any Lexington fire station. (WKYT)

Health

Kosair for Kids is investing $5 million to upgrade neonatal intensive care units across Baptist Health, including equipment enhancements at Baptist Health Lexington, the system’s busiest baby hospital. The funding aims to support growing demand and improve care for the region’s “most vulnerable children.”

Shop

The Lexington Farmers Market will host an indoor holiday market at Greyline Station on Saturday, Dec. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will bring together winter farmers, local artisans from the Lexington Makers Market, and limited returning summer vendors.
