Have you ever wondered what would happen if you walked in a straight line around the world from Lexington? Wonder no longer, wanderer.

Let us introduce you to LatLon Connect, an online tool that allows users to explore cities across the world that share the same latitude and longitude.

What we found

In our search, we stuck with the default settings, looking for places with 100,000+ people with a buffer zone of 6.21 miles (that’s 10 kilometers).

Dozens of results popped up, with the most populated city lying on the other side of the globe: Shijiazhuang, the largest city in China’s Hebei Province, pictured above. Estimates have its metro area population at over 11 million people.

News Notes

Today Is

The start of Keeneland’s Spring Meet — and we’ve got a few ways for you to enjoy the huge event. First up, tickets are still up for grabs.

History

Once you’ve secured those tickets, we recommend brushing up on some lore to impress your friends at the track. We recently wrote about a pair of trailblazing women who made history in Lexington.

State

At Keeneland, you may notice some change to Kentucky’s gambling laws in the coming weeks. A bill to raise the state’s gambling age from 18 to 21 is heading to the governor’s desk after lawmakers approved it. Read more about the potential changes. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

Try This

But spring is not just about Keeneland — it’s the perfect time to get out into nature. Tomorrow, UK is hosting a Walk with a Doc event at The Arboretum, a doctor-led walking group combining education, community, and gentle movement.

Asked

Kentucky’s budget for the 2027 Fiscal Year could be signed into law soon. In total, $32.4 billion is lined up, covering things like public services, disaster response, healthcare, and construction projects. Let us know which parts of the budget you’d like to read more about. (LEX 18)

Eat

Pepperoni, pickled pineapple, fermented serrano peppers, and an everything bagel crust. Pearl’s has done it again.

Sports

This time next week, the 90th edition of the Masters will be underway in Augusta, GA. Whether you’re dreaming of a Green Jacket or fancy learning about the game, a stroll around Lexington’s golf courses is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Plan Ahead

If you missed the first Yappy Hour event of the year, don’t worry. There are plenty more on the calendar for the Lexington Parks and Recreation-run events that bring local dog owners together at different city parks. The next one is near the end of May.

Seasonal

Speaking of city parks, you can make the most of the post-8 p.m. sunsets by finding a spot in the grass. Another winter will be here before we know it.

Quoted

“It’s chaotic in the best way. You can hear the screaming and laughing in all the rooms.” Read more about how UK is helping Girl Scouts collect their badges. Psst — the piece was written by former LEXtoday editor, Alexis Baker.

Eat

As the weather gets nicer, the last thing we want to do is spend more time inside cooking. To help you work smarter, not harder this spring, here’s a list of go-to, easy-to-make, healthy recipes from Kroger. Pro tip: Read now and bookmark for later.*

Finance

Are you asking your CPA the right questions? The right conversation can uncover tax-saving strategies, guide retirement decisions, and maximize deductions. Pro Tip

The Wrap

I can’t get enough of the Artemis II mission. The bravery, intelligence, and sense of adventure is truly inspiring.

For those with similar feelings of cosmic wanderlust, the Farish Planetarium is one way to indulge in Lexington. Another option — hop in the car and head out to an area with less light pollution to gaze upward. This map will help.
