Happy birthday to us. 🎉
Today is our first birthday here at LEXtoday — andwe’ll cry if we want to — as we reflect on our favorite stories from the last 365 days + give you a personal invitation to our happy hour birthday event.
Rocky the Dog | This story came to me from reader Jessica K. Rocky the Dog is a pet rock + neighborhood art piece that puts a smile on the face of all who cross his path.
Will Harbut and Man O’ War | History pieces are some of my favorite to write. Researching and writing about these local legends was an honor and a pleasure.
Leestown Coffee House | Lexington loves to support local. That’s just a fact. The owners of this coffee shop to a leap of faith to open their business, knowing that Lexington would show up to support them.
City Editor Molly’s favorite stories:
Be the Broker | I love dreaming up businesses in the available buildings around town — it was fun to learn that y’all did the same thing.
The Sorella Sisters | I really have loved all of the Q&As I’ve done, but getting a peek into the creative minds of Alma + Selma was just as sweet as their delicious gelato.
Hank the Horse | I spotted Hank at JosephBeth Bookseller’s once and of course, had to learn more. Like Lexington, his story + Tammi Jo Regan’s mission are so heart-warming and beautiful.

Breaks Interstate Park
This area of the Appalachian mountains is commonly referred to as “The Breaks.” | Photo by LEXtoday
Hey, y’all — Aaron here. 👋
Last week, I told you that I was heading out to do some camping with my family, and here’s what I saw.
We stayed at Breaks Interstate Park, a state park that straddles the border of both Virginia + Kentucky. This park is a three-hour drive from Lexington, but might be one of the best and easiest spots for checking out epic fall foliage vistas.
The park offers several breathtaking vantage points that are only a quick 25-yard walk from the car.
What’s really cool — while in the park, you are in the state of Virginia, but always looking into the mountains of Kentucky.
There’s also a restaurant on-site, so you can have a full biscuit and gravy breakfastbefore checking out the views.
Amenities include:
A lodge
Cabin rentals
An on-site restaurant
Zip lines
Elk Tours
Fishing
Rock climbing
Hiking
Let me know if you choose to check it out. I’m happy to give you some pointers.
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by City Editor Aaron.
Editor’s pick: Disney’s new movie “Hocus Pocus 2” premieres this Fri., Sept. 30 on the Disney+ streaming service and my family couldn’t be more excited. And with our city’s Parks and Recreation department showing the original “Hocus Pocus” on Saturday for its Freaky Flicks event, it’s sure to be a great weekend to kick off the spooky season in Lexington.
