Hank, the bell-ringing + book-reading horse that’s stealing hearts

We often don’t think twice when seeing horses in the Bluegrass. But a camera-loving gentle giant who pops up inside a brewery, a school, or a shopping center, might just make you do a double-take.

We’re sharing with you the heart-warming story of Hank. The tall Tennessee Walking horse is the inspiration for the nonprofit, For Hank’s Sake, which aims to strengthen communities through the power and beauty of horses.

Hank was given a second chance at life in 2012 thanks to Tammi Jo Regan who saw him with his head hanging low, malnourished + neglected in a muddy field. Coincidentally, Tammi said she always knew her second chapter in life was going to be about giving back, but she didn’t realize it would be with a horse. “The day I met Hank, I knew my life changed forever,” she said.

After months of patient work + bonding, things started looking up for Hank. “One day he just came alive and got out of his equine depression. He just picked his head up, his eyes lit up, he was like a new horse,” Tammi said. The pair continued their rehabilitation and training, and For Hank’s Sake was born.

Nowadays, Hank is often found at libraries + schools inspiring children to read, or ringing the bell to raise money for The Salvation Army. “He helps people feel good about themselves and ignites compassion which inspires action; whether it’s donating books, getting a library card, or dropping money in the Salvation Army bucket. I love seeing the goodness that he brings,” Tammi said.
