Where to get soup in Lexington

It’s soup season, LEX. There’s nothing better than a hot bowl of soup on a cold winter day or when you’re feeling a little under the weather.

We asked for your favorite spots, so today we’re serving up those places around the Horse Capital of the World that cook up “good soup.” Fun fact: Based on your submissions, Lexington seems to have a love affair with a classic tomato soup.

Smashing Tomato, Locations vary

The tomato basil chicken soup at this local pizza spot was by far the most loved + recommended soup across our social media posts. “I don’t even really like soup and that stuff is addicting.” — @jackieherbwinter

Winchell’s, 348 Southland Dr.

This neighborhood sports bar is the ideal spot to cheer on your favorite team and grab a bowl of fan-favorite tomato basil or white bean soups.

Le Deauville, 199 N. Limestone

If you’re looking to switch it up from our downtown French spot’s famous mussels, our followers recommend spooning up some French onion soup.

Dad’s Favorites, 820 Lane Allen Rd.

The second most popular spot to get local soups was this Southland staple. In particular, our followers love the potato soup, Mexican corn chowder, and the classic tomato soup with grilled cheese.

Everest, 1801 Alexandria Dr.

Instagram follower @soni_npl loves the dal (aka lentil) soup from this Nepalese and Indian restaurant, which can be made vegetarian or with chicken.

Far Out Espresso, 496 E. High St.

Don’t let the name fool you, @semiferalbrooke says the grilled cheese and tomato soup combo at this Woodland coffee shop is “a hidden gem.”

  • The Obstinate Sons is in the final stages of construction before opening at 829 Chevy Chase Pl. The restaurant will serve up “comfort fusion meets Kentucky tradition” dishes with an extensive list of wines, cocktails, and vintage bourbons. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we learn more.

  • According to the 2023 annual report from ONE Lexington, our city saw a 46% decrease in homicides from 2022 — the lowest its been since 2018. The city initiative works with local youth + young adults to help with conflict mediations, crisis response, and survivor support.

  • Our neighbors in Nicholasville are getting a unique new local shop — Unify Coffee. Located at 121 Bethel Harvest Dr., the space will house a coffee shop, cereal bar, and vintage clothing store all-in-one. Stop by its grand opening Saturday, Jan. 20 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Kentucky Native Cafe has launched a new reading series called Last Monday, which will host various local + regional authors for an evening of spoken word. The first iteration will be held Monday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m., when you’ll hear from novelist Bobbie Ann Mason + poet John Lackey.

  • Kentucky State Parks is celebrating 100 years by hosting a variety of events throughout the year. Kicking things off is the Winter Adventure Weekend at Carter Caves State Resort Park, Thursday, Jan. 25-Sunday, 28. If you’re looking to stay closer to LEX, check out our guide to hiking.   • The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival will return to downtown Lexington Saturday, March 16, and you can be a part of the fun. Applications are due today for festival + concession vendors and those wishing to participate in the parade can apply through Friday, March 1.

An art-filled Friday

This Friday, Jan. 19 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., dozens of galleries, museums, artist studios, and creative spaces around downtown open their doors for the community to view art, which can only mean one thing — the kick-off of LexArts Hop’s 30th anniversary.

Unique pieces of work can be found in conventional art spaces think: Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center, Living Arts & Science Center, or the 21c Museum Hotel — as well as unconventional spots like Central Bank + First Presbyterian Church. Map out your tour.

That’s not the only artsy happening this Friday — UK’s School of Art and Visual Studies’ Spring 2024 Visiting Artist and Scholar Series opens at 12 p.m. at Bolivar Art Gallery.

The event is free and open to the public + will host a lecture with multimedia artist Alice Pixley Young. Bolivar Art Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. + Saturday, 12-4 p.m.
