How to celebrate Summerween in Lexington

Tons of jack-o-lanterns all lit up

We know it might be hard to believe, but we’re less than 90 days away from zombies taking downtown by storm. That’s right, Halloween is fast-approaching, but for some, it’s a lifestyle — not a season. Enter: Summerween, that period of time during the summer when it’s too hot to function and dreams of crisp air + colorful leaves infiltrate your mind.

Grab your plaid and block out the 80% humidity, here’s how to have a Summerween day in Lexington.

Morning

North Lime Coffee & Donuts is here to fill in the pumpkin-sized hole in your heart. Head to any of its locations to try three different seasonal drinks. If a hot coffee is the last thing you want, don’t fret — all of these drinks can be made iced:
  • Pumpkin Pancake
  • Chai-der
  • S’mores Cold Brew

Afternoon

Now that you’re caffeinated, it’s time to explore the city. If you want to be surrounded by weeping willows, we recommend taking a self-guided tour through the Lexington Cemetery. Here, you can learn about Lexington’s history and even see one of the world’s largest Basswood trees that is 300+ years old.

Afterward, head to West Third Street to take a gander at Old Morrison — aka the tomb of early 19th-century botany professor Constantine Rafinesque, who was fired by college president Horace Holley and would later claim that he left “the College with curses on it and Holley.”

Evening

Once the sun goes down, that’s when the frightful fun really begins. If you’re eager to hear stories of spirits that linger, The Ghost Walk Lexington is your place to be. It’s soul 65-minute walking tour for the month is on Saturday, Aug. 31, where you’ll explore Gratz Park + learn more about the spirits that supposedly roam the area.

If a tour is a too up-close-and-personal for you, we suggest taking the fictional route. The Kentucky Theatre’s rotating films often include everything from modern horror to classic screams. This month, you can catch “Trap,” the newest movie from M. Night Shyamalan.

News Notes
Sports
  • UK’s football and swimming + diving programs will be on probation for two years due to separate violations. As a result of an agreement with the school and the NCAA, the football program will vacate all 10 of its wins from the 2021 season — including its Citrus Bowl win. (Lexington Herald-Leader)
Biz
  • Some changes are coming to the Warehouse Block. The Blushery will transition from a traditional retail storefront to a monthly pop-up boutique and event space. Stay tuned to its social media to keep up with the new look + concept coming to 825 National Ave.
Pets
  • Our dog-friendly guide just got a lot friendlier. Rolling Oven at Mirror Twin Brewing now serves pup cups for its furrier customers filled with apples, brown rice, carrots, plain chicken, peanut butter, and potatoes. Pavlov’s got nothing on this.
Sports
  • While we’re known for rocking Kentucky blue, it might be time to incorporate some green. The Lexington Sporting Club revealed the USL Super League’s inaugural away kit last week, with design that pays homage to Kentucky. You can buy yours now.
Plan Ahead
  • To celebrate its centennial, the Junior League of Lexington will host a free open house at its headquarters, the Bodley-Bullock House. On Sunday, Sept. 8, visitors can take self-guided tours through the historic home, walk the grounds created by one of its founding members, and learn more about Lexington’s heritage.

The public is invited to watch 10+ films focused on conservation efforts, climate advocacy, and educating the public about ways to protect our environment. Think: Energy and climate change, conservation efforts, environmental justice, community activism, and more.

Short films that will be screened include:
  • “6,000 Miles”
  • “A Renewable Future”
  • “The Beauty Between”
  • “Biopixels”
  • “Brave Girl”
  • “Counting Cranes”
  • “Paddle Tribal Waters”
  • “Toxic Art”

I had a great time at the Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday attending one of the most Lexington-esque events I’ve been to. The Gay Polo League Tournament, an international league, made its debut in town — and it was as competitive as it was fabulous.
