Closing
  • Last month, we reported that Pivot Brewing would be selling off its Lexington + Louisville locations. Now, the Delaware Avenue cidery has announced that it will close after a “Last Call” celebration on Saturday, Aug. 31.
Art
  • Gatton Park on the Town Branch is seeking artists to help create an interactive outdoor public art piece. The theme will focus on the history of Black Lexingtonians “who were essential to the creation of...early commerce along the Town Branch.” Applications are open until Wednesday, Sept. 18.

  • Last call for splish splashin’ fun. Some of Lexington’s aquatic centers will close for the season on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. Shilito and Woodland aquatic centers will move to postseason hours starting Wednesday, Aug. 14 through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.
Civic

Listen
  • We like our sound quality how we like our Rise N’ Brine bacon — extra crispy. While most hearing aids have one processor, this device has two, which process speech + noise separately. The result: Clear, crisp, effortless listening and conversations. (Plus, it’s tiny.)*
Correction
  • Earlier this week, we reported that the grand opening for smoothie bowl shop Playa Bowls would be this weekend. That was incorrect, and the grand opening will take place Saturday, Aug. 17 starting at 11 a.m.

If you’ve been watching the Paris 2024 Olympics, you may have noticed several new + newish sports, including 3x3 basketball. Let’s explore what you need to know about this fairly new event.

3x3 Basketball

This sport debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and takes inspiration from urban street basketball. Here’s how the event looked like at this year’s event:
  • 3x3 Basketball is played on one-half of a basketball court; there are two teams, each with three players. They attack + defend the same hoop.
  • The first team to reach 21 points or the highest score in 10 minutes wins.
  • Team USA’s women’s 3x3 Basketball roster, which features our very own former Wildcat Rhyne Howard, won the bronze medal.
Here’s where you can try the sport across Lexington:

I’m not the athletic type, but after watching the speed walking event at the Olympics, I can’t help but think I could win the gold if there was bottomless brunch at the finish line.
