We know the question on your mind, Lexingtonians — when’s it going to get cold? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for December, January, and February. While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what winter will bring.

Reminder: The first day of winter is on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The holidays are almost here — which might mean extra cooking, cleaning, or guests at home.

To help keep your pipes running smoothly, Live Green Lexington has a few simple recommendations that might help you avoid the headache of plumbing issues.

The kitchen area

  • Avoid dumping fats, oils, or grease down the drain as these can cause blockages. Instead, save them in a container and toss them in the trash.
  • Scrape plates before rinsing in the sink to prevent food from going down the drain.
  • Bring leftover cooking oil to the Gobble Grease Toss on Friday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In the bathroom

  • Did you know? Flushable wipes aren’t actually flushable. They should be thrown away in the trash.
  • Never flush menstrual products, dental floss, diapers, or any other trash down the toilet. (Read: Don’t treat your toilet like a trash can.)
Pro tip: Small actions now can save you from big plumbing problems later.

Coming to a shopping center near you

From a newly-opened hospital, to a forthcoming middle school, more additions are on the horizon for Hamburg Pavilion. Let’s take a look at these new businesses and when to expect them in this growing part of town.

First up: The Fresh Market, expected to open late 2025 or early 2026. The North Carolina-based upscale grocery store will go in the former Buy Buy Baby spot. Developer + owner Patrick Madden said getting a specialty grocer into the area has been a decades-long effort. This will be the second Fresh Market in Lexington, joining the original location in the Landsdowne Shoppes.

Taking over the former Bed Bath & Beyond will be two new-to-Lexington businesses — Sierra Trading Post and Skechers. The former is a sister store to Home Goods + TJ Maxx offering discount outdoor gear, but no opening date has been announced. Shoe brand Skechers is expected to open its store in the fall of 2025.
