Your songs about home

A horse in a field in the morning haze. There is a yellowish glow from distant sunlight coming through the trees, casting yellowish tones on the grass. Fences and trees surround the lone horse who is grazing.

What songs remind you of home? Whether it’s this city, the Bluegrass region, or the whole state of Kentucky, there’s no shortage of songs that spark nostalgia and local pride.

We asked for your suggestions and compiled a playlist for your listening pleasure. Here’s what you came up with:

My Old Kentucky Home, Goodnight” by John Prine, submitted by Joanne S.
“Oh, the sun shines bright
On my old Kentucky home”

Scar Tissue” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, submitted by Kristi P.
The Californian band rarely veers from singing about its home state, but this 1999 song references a Kentuckian love interest.

Me and Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin, submitted by Sandy M.
Speaking of California, Joplin mentions it in her tune about two young travelers:
“From the Kentucky coal mine to the California sun,
there Bobby shared the secrets of my soul.”

Sports

In 79 days, the UK Men’s Basketball 2025-2026 season will tip off. That means time is running out to get some tickets, with the renewal deadline for season ticket holders just over two weeks away on Friday, Aug. 22. When game times are confirmed and the schedule is set, we’ll update you.

Closing

A decades-old Lexington store is shuttering its doors. “After 30 years of selling CDs and records, we will be closing CD Central in early September,” the store’s owner, Steve, wrote on Instagram. Get down there and show them some love before it’s too late, folks.

Closed

It’s a cruel summer for beloved local institutions — the Chuck E. Cheese in the Woodhill Circle Plaza recently closed down. Since the early 1980s, the spot has hosted birthday parties and dished out pizza alongside its resident rodential animatronic band. A reason for closure has not been made public. We asked you yesterday where you’d put an outdoor library in Lexington, and here are some of your ideas:
  • Multiple readers agreed with our idea to use The Arboretum.
  • Raven Run was also a popular choice among respondents.
  • The Henry Clay Estate was submitted by one reader — talk about a book with a view.
  • Other parks written in include Castlewood, Jacobson, Masterson, and Shilito.
Have your say

The Wrap

How about we finish this newsletter with even more reader feedback? Here’s one email that I want to give a special shoutout to:
