Stamp collectors, assemble

An image of an old school Lexington-Concord stamp. It shows the years 1775 and 1925 on it, a five cent logo, and is blue in color.

Last week, we shared news of USPS’ voting contest to bring back classic stamps. We then received an email from reader Phillip B., who offered up some wonderful info on Lexington’s stamp collector community:
  • Henry Clay Philatelic Society — a local stamp club here in Lexington — is hosting a free, public stamp show on Saturday, Sept. 20.
  • Phillip says “there will be several stamp dealers present... to answer questions about the hobby and give information on how to start collecting.”
  • HCPS also meets every third Monday of the month at the Broadway Christian Church at 7 p.m.
Phillip had some parting advice and wisdom, too: “Come by and check out a hobby practiced everyday by your neighbors, people across the community, kings, queens, and US presidents.”

VCs back startups for outsized returns. Regular people wait. But rule changes fixed that.

Take Revolut. In 2016, 433 people averaged a $2,370 stake. Today? That’s worth $1 million+, up 89,900%. No wonder 10,000+ people and the same VCs behind Uber and Venmo are taking the chance on Pacaso.

Founded by a former Zillow exec, they’ve earned $110 million+ in gross profit to date. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO. Invest for $2.90/share.‡‡

News Notes

Pets

Yes, you can bring your dog. Lexington is the No. 9 most pet-friendly city in the country, per a new WalletHub study. The rankings were compiled using metrics like pet budget, pet health and wellness, and outdoor fun. Our dog-friendly businesses have plenty on offer for Fido.

Mansion Monday

Do you want to live in a former Kentucky governor’s home? Well now you can. This Colonial Revival home in West Gardenside just hit the real estate market. It was designed and lived in by renowned architect Hugh Meriwether and has a whole host of gorgeous features. And no, we don’t know which governor.

Eat

Are Gen Z cereal killers? Sales of the boxed breakfast have fallen by 13% in the US compared to 2021 — a decline attributed to changing preferences in young Americans. But who can blame them when they have local brunch options like this? (New York Post)

On This Day

Today marks 159 years since the first public roller skating rink opened to the US public back in 1866. Thankfully, LEX has a lot more options to keep the kiddos entertained these days. (WUN)
“Hot Girl Summer” ruled in 2019. “Brat” summer took over in 2024. Now, this summer has been dubbed “brain rot summer” — a season with no viral anthem, no clear vibe, and scattered cultural chatter. If that makes you want to unplug entirely, touch grass at a local park. (Business Insider)

Have you heard of a “Coolcation?” In short, it’s a travel trend to beat the heat + take a trip to cooler regions of the world, like Iceland, Norway, and Alaska.

Luckily for us, we’ve got a world-class airport right here in Lexington where your arctic expedition can begin. And luckily for you, we’ve got a guide to make your journey through LEX a whole lot smoother.

What to know

  • Parking | Not everyone has a bestie that will drop them off at the terminal at 3 a.m., thankfully LEX has options. See rates for short-term, long-term, and valet parking.
  • TSA | According to TSA officials, it takes ~5 minutes to get through during off-peak hours and ~15 minutes during peak hours (which are around 6-9 a.m.).
  • Map it out | If you’re like us and need to completely visualize a place before you step foot inside, these maps of the entire airport will be your saving grace.

Answered

Did you spot which artist we referenced in every newsletter last week?

Congratulations to Dominique C. who was first to guess the correct answer — Taylor Swift. Here’s where we brought her up:
  • The Wrap on Monday, Aug. 4: “It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem it’s me.”
  • Post of the Day on Tuesday, Aug. 5: “Are you after a slice of New England summer before August slips away?”
  • News Notes on Wednesday, Aug. 6: It’s a cruel summer for beloved local institutions...”
  • News Notes on Thursday, Aug. 7: “Skunks can be trouble when they walk into your backyard.”
  • News Notes on Friday, Aug, 8: “And if you’re looking to fill up some more blank space on your fall calendar...”
If you didn’t guess it this time, shake it off.

The Wrap

Right folks, my time in Lexington is coming to a close. Alexis is taking over soon. and I’m so excited for you to meet her — even though I’ll miss you.
