A wintry mix for some Lexingtonians means avoiding any unnecessary contact with the elements, but as soon as there’s snow on the ground, many break out their winter gear, sleds, and hit the local slopes.

Lexington has no shortage of sledding terrain, but consider using our tips to make the most of the snow and make your speediest run yet.

Best spots to sled

  • Higbee Mill Park, 1421 Higbee Mill Rd.
  • Jacobson Park (near the dog park), 4001 Athens-Boonesboro Rd.
  • Stonewall Park, 3205 Cornwall Dr.
  • William T. Young Library, 401 Hilltop Ave.
  • Veteran’s Park Elementary School (hill behind building), 4351 Clearwater Way

Winter weather safety

The University of Kentucky outlines useful guidelines for staying safe in cold weather, including how to choose weather-appropriate clothing and footwear, hypothermia and frostbite awareness, and — even for sledding — how to safely fall on snow or ice.

News Notes

Announced

The Lexington Opera House will celebrate its 140th birthday and the 50th anniversary of its renovation this May with BRAVOH!. The weeklong celebration of tributes and performances is presented by The Opera House Fund, the team behind the theater’s 1976 restoration and reopening.
Google’s 2025 Year in Search is out, and its local search function provides an interesting peek into our city’s queries. Did you know that Lexingtonians searched for Travis Kelce jerseys more than any other player or sports team? We prefer Wildcats merch, but to each their own.

Lexington saw substantial snowfall yesterday, and may see a continued wintry mix later this week. Review the city’s snow and ice control plan, which includes a snow removal map. See where your street ranks. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

The Wrap

When snow hits the Bluegrass, I typically enjoying curling up with a peppermint mocha from any of Lexington’s coffee shops, but what kind of University of Kentucky alumni would I be if I didn’t recommend sledding in the Willy T. bowl?
