Winter weather safety
The University of Kentucky outlines useful guidelines for staying safe in cold weather, including how to choose weather-appropriate clothing and footwear, hypothermia and frostbite awareness, and — even for sledding — how to safely fall on snow or ice.
- When falling forward, backward, or to the side, tuck your chin, slap the ground with your palm and forearm, and avoid landing on your wrists or head.
- Take slow, steady steps, test the surface, and avoid icy spots.
- Dress in layers and keep extremities warm.
- Stay dry and don’t forget your snow boots.
- Hypothermia occurs when the body gets dangerously cold. Signs include intense shivering, confusion, or extreme tiredness. Move indoors, dry off, and seek medical help.
- Frostbite is the freezing of fingers, toes, ears, or nose. Watch for numbness or pale, hard skin. Warm slowly and seek medical care.
