December is full of celebrations — whether you’re marking the remainder of Hanukkah, Yule, Christmas, or Kwanzaa, or ringing in the New Year, there’s a good chance your calendar is packed with parties this month.

Before you blast the jam, though, it’s worth asking: how well do you actually know Lexington’s noise ordinance? Lucky for you, we’re breaking it down in plain terms — no need to dig through city statutes if your neighbors come knocking.

What is the time range?

The ordinance was updated and passed on Aug. 22, 2023, when the Social Services & Public Safety Committee set time frames limiting noise disturbances from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays. The ordinance extends to 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

News Notes

Civic

City waste pickup was canceled yesterday and the makeup day is scheduled for tomorrow, Dec. 17, according to an announcement from Live Green Lexington. Any carts already on the curb can remain left out as the city will not be ticketing due to weather.

Pets

A judge upheld Lexington’s ban on retail sales of dogs and cats following the dismissal of a 2024 lawsuit by Petland. If you’re looking to add a furry friend this holiday season, you can still adopt through the Lexington Humane Society or a local non-profit. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

Cause

Cafe Patachou, Lexington’s newest all-day cafe in Fritz Farm, is hosting a giveback weekend Friday, Dec. 19-Sunday, Dec. 21 in collaboration with FoodChain. FoodChain is a local non-profit aiming to increase the community’s access to locally sourced fresh food. The cafe will make a matching donation tied to all alcohol sales this weekend.

Active

Lexington Habitat for Humanity is now accepting registration for the 20th annual Shamrock Shuffle 3K on Saturday, March 14. This fun, chip-timed run + walk through downtown welcomes all ages — featuring awards, prizes, and a costume contest for humans and dogs. Early bird registration is $30 through Monday, Jan. 5.

Weather

Lexington had bitter temperatures the past few days, and it’s finally taking a turn for the better. We saw as low as 4°F yesterday — if you’re like me, you can’t stand the cold, but love when the Bluegrass turns into a winter wonderland. Stroll down memory lane with Lexington’s most historical snowfalls.

Today Is

Arthur C. Clarke’s birthday. The famous science fiction author would have been 108 today. Known for the classic “2001: A Space Odyssey,” you can celebrate by picking up one of his novels — no homicidal supercomputer required — and check out some of Lexington’s best local bookstores while you’re at it.
