December is full of celebrations — whether you’re marking the remainder of Hanukkah, Yule, Christmas, Kwanzaa or ringing in the New Year, there’s a good chance your calendar is packed with parties this month.
Before you blast the jam, though, it’s worth asking: how well do you actually know Lexington’s noise ordinance? Lucky for you, we’re breaking it down in plain terms — no need to dig through city statutes if your neighbors come knocking.
What is the time range?
The ordinance was updated and passed on Aug. 22, 2023, when the Social Services & Public Safety Committee set time frames limiting noise disturbances from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays. The ordinance extends to 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
What noises aren’t allowed?
Sorry, night owls and early risers. Refrain from the following activities if they occur outside noise ordinance hours. Additionally, an activity is prohibited if “the noise disturbance also crosses the boundary of a dwelling unit,” according to the city’s guidance.
- Operating tools or equipment, including lawn mowers
- Amplified sound (like loudspeakers or PA systems)
- Motorized hobby vehicles (think powered model cars or drones)
- General loud activities (including loading, unloading or moving materials)
- Music played through speakers, TVs or instruments
- Noisy vehicle repairs or engine testing
- Persistent animal noise, including barking dogs
If you need to file a noise complaint, call 311 — just note that exceptions are often made for major holidays like New Year’s.
