Editor’s Pick

Super Bowl LX is this Sunday, Feb. 8, and if you’re anything like Editor Alexis, the watch party menu matters just as much as (if not more than) who takes home the Lombardi Trophy.

According to data from RotoGrinders, Kentuckians have clear Super Bowl snack favorites — buffalo wings and chips with queso — so we rounded up our top picks for your table.
  • Wing KYng | This delicious restaurant in Greyline Station serves up jumbo chicken wings with a large assortment of sauces, including its signature BooDolla (Jerked GarlicParm).
  • El Rancho Tapatio | Many Lexingtonians have their tried-and-true cheese dip, but consider taking it to the next level with a local favorite from El Rancho Tapatio: queso dip with chorizo.

News Notes

Donut World in Lexington’s Meadowthorpe neighborhood, which had planned to close Jan. 25, will reopen tomorrow. The brief closure was said to be linked to business challenges from a change in ownership and ongoing construction in the area. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

Real Estate

Lexington’s historic Peter Paul House at 220 Market St. in Gratz Park has new owners. Famous for its pink color and Federal-style design, the 200-year-old home has long been part of the city’s history. The sale ensures the house and its courtyard, including a ginkgo tree linked to Henry Clay, will be preserved.

Cause

T.G. Shuck, the winner of Kentucky Sports Radio’s Meteorologist Madness snowfall prediction contest, chose the Lexington Humane Society to receive the $10,000 prize.

“We’re in recovery like everyone else but I’m happy to say our stores are up and running and in stock and ready to go,” Kroger’s head of communications Jessica Sharp said. Most stores have replenished shelves, and customers can expect normal inventory levels across many product categories. (WKYT)

When you think of a private island, you probably imagine palm trees, gently lapping waves, and a favorable UV index. That’s not exactly the case with this isolated piece of land in northeastern Maine. It’s a little warmer on the rooftop deck of this local downtown condo.

Environment

Discover how to identify trees even in winter at Shaker Village during a Winter Tree ID Workshop on Friday, Feb. 20. The program will highlight ways to recognize trees across the site using details like bark patterns, buds, leaf scars, and scent.

It’s officially the month of love, and we’ve rounded up themed ideas for a date night that feels a little more special.

Whether you’re planning something for Valentine’s Day or celebrating all month long, keep these ideas handy.

If you want an “old fashioned”-style date

  • Two straws, one milkshake — get that, and many more shareable desserts, at Freshie’s Ice Cream & Soda Fountain. Pro tip: Dating a vegan? This spot has options.
  • The old school vibes from Ford’s Garage near Fayette Mall will take you back in time. The brand-new burger and beer joint offers vintage dining among antique cars.
  • Take a leisurely stroll along South Ashland Avenue to soak in the historic homes, then wrap up the evening with a cozy drink at Charlie Brown’s or Chevy Chase Inn.
  • Sip on an actual Old Fashioned at OBC — one of our favorite spots to get the cocktail — or learn more about bourbon in a guided tour of the Pepper Distillery.
