Last week, the city of Lexington announced its Corridors Commission was accepting applications for the Neighborhood Enhancement Match Grant Program. Today, we’re taking a look at what the Corridors Commission does + how you can help beautify the drive along Lexington’s roads.
What does the Corridors Commission do?
The goal of the Corridors Commission is to assess the major roads + minor arterials in Fayette County. The group looks at the aesthetic qualities — including landscaping, fencing, signage, and litter control — as well as bike and pedestrian accessibility. The group takes their findings and makes recommendations to the Mayor.
Match grant program
The program is designed to enhance Fayette County’s 31 eligible corridors by partnering with neighborhoods + other community-based groups. Keyword there being partnering. It’s a two-to-one match — for every dollar requested, the applicant must provide an additional 50-cent match. Here are some ideas of what the commission is looking for with applications —
- Physical improvements for public or community property such as planting street trees, installation of benches, or sidewalk/bike lane repair.
- Activities to plan + promote neighborhood improvement efforts — think organized community cleanups for trash, or abandoned building and car removal. Activities to enhance the beauty of corridors
Pro tip: The Corridors Commission is not looking for routine maintenance activities or recreation + daycare program operational activities.
How to get involved
Incorporated, active neighborhood or homeowners associations + federally-recognized nonprofits are eligible to participate. Grant applications are due by Tues., Mar. 1 + recipients should be notified by Fri., Mar. 25.
