The main event, trick-or-treating, will take place on Halloween — Thursday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. — but here are nine more seasonal events offering fun + frights for everyone. Pro tip: Don’t forget about our list of movies + kid-specific happenings.

Thriller and Halloween Parade
Zombies will be taking over downtown this Sunday, Oct. 20 at this annual event that’s been listed as a “Top 10 Halloween Destination” by USA Today. The variety show kicks off 5 p.m. followed by the parades at 6:30 p.m.

Jack-o-Lantern Trail
From Thursday, Oct. 24 to Monday, Oct. 28, the walking path at McConnell Springs Park will be aglow with carved pumpkin creations. Visits are $6 per person, while children 12 and under are free.

Midnight Music Fair
Al’s Bar is inviting you to eat, drink, and enjoy some haunting tunes at its Halloween music + art fair. The party will be rocking from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Oct. 25 and tickets are $15.

PumpkinMania
Head to Old Morrison to see hundreds of glowing pumpkins from Sunday, Oct. 27 through Thursday, Oct. 31. Stay tuned for a future newsletter where we’ll share more about new events happening at Transy that week.

Dog Costume Contest
Get your pup all dressed up and head out to West Sixth Farm for its Halloween Costume Contest on Sunday, Oct. 27, 1-4 p.m. West Sixth Cantina will be serving food, and $1 from every beer sold will support the Franklin County Humane Society. Costume contest entries are $10.

Spirit Strolls: Death and Tragedy at Pleasant Hill
Spend Halloween strolling through Shaker Village while listening to spine-tingling tales about the darker side of the historic site. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. experience are $15.

    • Lexington-Fayette County’s Urban Growth Master Plan is now available for review, including usage details for the county’s 2,833-acre expansion. Locals can leave feedback by attending the Planning Commission’s public hearing today, Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at City Hall, by leaving a website comment, or via email.
    Sports
    • The Associated Press placed the UK women’s basketball team at No. 22 on its “AP Top 25" preseason poll. This is the 11th time in the past 15 seasons that the Wildcats have made the preseason list. (UK Athletics)
    Civic
    • Make sure you’re prepared to vote in Kentucky’s 2024 General Election. Next Tuesday, Oct. 22 is the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot. If approved, excused-in person absentee voting will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
    Watch
    • A sweet story about a special bond between a young boy, Cody Dorman, and a horse, Cody’s Wish, is set to become a movie. Director Jeff Celentano said that his goal is to shoot as much of the film in central Kentucky + casting should begin in the next few months. (Lexington Herald-Leader)

    • Al Roker is heading to our neck of the woods. The famed weatherman will speak at the Kentucky Book Festival at Joseph-Beth Booksellers on Saturday, Nov. 2. He will discuss his book “Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By” with Kentucky culinary experts Edward Lee and Ouita Michel — grab tickets.
