Create a backyard wildlife haven

Want more from your lawn than just grass? You could turn it into a mini “national park.”

Meet Homegrown National Park, a nationwide grassroots movement that invites property owners to restore wildlife habitats through sustainable planting and the removal of invasive species.

Here’s how it works: Swap a portion of your lawn for native plants that support food webs for local fauna, then watch your yard transform into a natural oasis where wildlife thrives.

Registered habitats are tracked on a digital biodiversity map, so you can see which Lexingtonian neighbors are pitching in.

Philadelphia’s cheesesteak scene recently entered the Michelin Guide for the first time, and was met with controversy. As with all cities, locals have their favorites when it comes to regional classics. That got us thinking: Which Lexington sandwich spots should make the Michelin guide? Let us know. (New York Times)

Older Adults

Healthy eating, going for walks, and gardening. Those are three things that a group of centenarians credit for their long life in a new UnitedHealthcare survey of 100-year-olds. Another common factor was strength training, so it’s never too late to go to the gym.

Stat

$109.6. That’s the value of $100 in Lexington, according to a new Tax Foundation study on purchasing power across the US. Compare that to California’s $87.42, and your wallet may be feeling a bit thicker than before. Pro tip: Keep it that way by filling your calendar with free activities. (Upworthy)

Craving a slice of ‘za? Chowhound just named its top hole-in-the-wall pizza spot in Kentucky, and a pizzeria in Louisville claimed the title. We think they’re sleeping on Lexington’s pizza scene — peruse our pizza guide to find your new favorite slice.

The Wrap

My pick for Michelin guide worthy sandwich spots is hands down Chef Ouita Michel’s Wallace Station. Specifically, The Wallace Cubano.

Fun fact: Michel was named to 2025’s Kentucky Women’s Remembered Hall of Fame by Gov. Andy Beshear and Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman.
