Meet the Lexington Saints: our new (and only) youth rugby team

If the USA Rugby team stole your heart, now your kiddos have the opportunity to learn how to play the sport locally.

If you’re like us and still thinking about Ilona Maher + the USA Rugby team, we’d like to introduce you to the Lexington Saints.

The youth organization gives athletes ages 5 to 18 the opportunity to learn + participate in the sport of rugby — the first of its kind here in the city.

“We have really good rugby here in Lexington, and none of the players are from Lexington or played in high school — until now,” said Lexington Saints Head Coach Henry Johnson.

Despite the lack of sanctioned teams for the sport, he noted that the UK + UofL club teams, as well as the local men’s club team, have all made it to their respective national championships.

Kids in grades 4-12 are invited to learn how to play flag rugby — no experience necessary — next Saturday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park. Follow the team’s social media for more updates.
