The selfless act of saving a stranger

Nick had never spoken to Jillian before she became a matching donor — now? “It’s like having a second mom,” he said. “She’s raising three kids and constantly checking on me.”

Nick Corman, a young firefighter recruit, was on the verge of seeing his lifelong dream slip away due to advanced kidney disease and being placed on dialysis indefinitely.

When his twin sister, Kristen, and multiple other family members were not found to be a match for Nick, hope seemed distant. That was until Jillian Kyde, the mother of one of Kristen’s second grade students, stepped in.

While volunteering at her son’s school, Jillian asked Kristen for an update on her brother. Without hesitation, Jillian volunteered to be tested — and in an incredible twist of fate, she was a perfect match.

“People sometimes look at me like I’m crazy or something,” Jillian said. “Once I got tested, there was never a moment of hesitation that I would do it. As a parent myself, I knew I would want someone to save my baby if ever in a similar circumstance. Being a parent gave me the perspective and peace I needed in making such a big decision.”

Her selfless act gave Nick a second chance at life, allowing him to complete his firefighter training and fulfill his dream of serving his community. Along the way, Jillian’s children, especially her oldest son, Brady, witnessed their mother’s courage and generosity, leaving a lasting impression on their lives.

Today, Nick is living life to the fullest. He’s been in action as a firefighter for over a year and recently married his fiancée, who stood by him through it all. His journey is a powerful reminder of how one decision can change countless lives.

April is Donate Life Month, so now’s a great time to celebrate the lifesaving power of organ donation.

Nick and Jillian’s story shows that giving the gift of life doesn’t just transform one person’s future — it creates a ripple effect that touches families, friends, and entire communities.
