March is Women’s History Month and the Lexington Public Library is making it easy for community members to celebrate. Skip the box office and head to the Farish Theater at the Central Library for its Women’s History Month Film Series. These free screenings on select Tuesday and Thursdays throughout March feature movies written + directed by women, starring women, and featuring woman and girl centered stories. Pro tip: all showtimes are 2 p.m.

  • “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” | Tuesday, March 4 | This coming-of-age tale based on the classic Judy Blume novel follows a young girl as she navigates adolescence, friendship + a search for spiritual identity.
  • “Call Jane” | Thursday, March 6 | Set in the 1960s, this film tells the story of a suburban woman who joins an underground network of women providing safe abortions, highlighting the fight for reproductive rights + the power of collective action.
  • “Barbie” | Tuesday, March 11 | From writer + director Greta Gerwig, this Oscar nominee for Best Picture set worldwide box office records, grossing $1.4 billion while spreading a story of self-acceptance and understanding.
  • “9 to 5" | Tuesday, March 18 | Starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and most importantly Dolly Parton, this 1980 workplace comedy went on to inspire a five-season tv show + Broadway musical, as well as the Grammy award-winning song of the same name.
  • “Hidden Figures” | Tuesday, March 25 | Three Black women play pivotal roles in the space race as they break barriers of race + gender in this family friendly film based on a true story.
  • “Bound” | Thursday, March 27 | A gripping neo-noir thriller about two women planning a heist + falling in love, brought to you by The Wachowski’s, who would later gain worldwide fame for creating The Matrix.
