This week in city hall, the city’s Redistricting Workgroup will be presenting its recommendations at Thursday’s General Government and Social Services (GGSS) Committee meeting. The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. on Thurs., Oct. 27 and you can watch it live here .
In case you missed it — every 10 years, local governments use new data from the Census to redraw their district lines to reflect how local populations have changed. View Lexington’s new district map here .
Here are a few of the major recommendations being proposed:
- Appointees who serve on the Redistricting Committee (the individuals who draw up the map every 10 years) must agree to not run for District Council in the next five years after their appointment.
- Including major roads + thoroughfares as boundaries for districts
- Councils should be removed from their districts once maps change
- Neighborhood associations should be split into different districts
