Let’s go back to school this fall — but make it fun. Because continuous learning throughout life not only decreases isolation, but also improves cognitive abilities, keeping your brain active + healthy.

As you may know, OLLI at UK offers educational, social, and community events for adults ages 50+ in our community. Don’t worry — there aren’t any tests or homework. Your only goal is to enjoy learning about something new and meet new people.

So, what classes are available? Here are six that we’d love to take this fall:

🎼 Music Composition with Computers

Dreaming of composing your own masterpiece? Participants can develop digital literacy skills through making music with modern music technology. Through a combination of lecture, discussion, interactive activities + music-making activities with modern music technology, participants will develop digital learning skills to make music during each classsounds like music to our ears.

🐍 Poisons and Toxins and Venoms - Oh My!

Did you know that you shouldn’t let your grandchildren eat any of your oleander plants? Or that Juliet probably drank a nightshade potion? This course will discuss various naturally occurring poisons, including their sources and how they act on the body. Along with plants, this course also explores animal venoms + other natural poisons. Bonus: No science background is required.

🎨 How to Paint Fur and Feathers

Expand your artistic skills to help you complete a portrait of your furry friend or capture a wildlife scene in your backyard. Students can choose to just observe as an instructor leads them through a live demonstration or actively follow along in this class.

🎬 Danger, Suspense and Deception: The Best of Alfred Hitchcock

Explore the mind of this famous filmmaker and the confounding, entertaining worlds he created during this four-week online course.

🍄 Psychoactive Drugs

Humans have a long history of using psychoactive drugs to alter their moods and perceptual experiences, inhibit pain, and treat psychological and neurological disorders. Participants will learn not only how the drugs work in the brain, but also some information about their historic roles + current social impacts.

🕺Line Dancing

Engage your mind and body while improving your fitness. Hint: If you can count to eight as you walk, you’ll be successful in this class.
