November 11 is Veterans Day, a holiday with origins dating back to 1918 to commemorate the end of World War I. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill that would make Veterans Day a holiday honoring all people who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Today, the community is invited to join Mayor Linda Gorton + representatives of American Legion Post 8 and Post 132 at Veterans Park at 10 a.m. for a rededication ceremony + livestream of the city’s World War I monument — 100 years after its original dedication. Want more ways to honor local veterans? Here are some ideas:

  • Explore local art: Lexington has many displays honoring veterans, including the recently installed Veterans Street Banners program on Vine Street. Veterans Park also has many displays, like the Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame monument installed last year.
  • Volunteer: The city’s Veterans Affairs department supports many service organizations that offer opportunities where you can help veterans.
  • Support veteran-owned businesses: Use your dollars at companies operated by vets. Find businesses by exploring Commerce Lexington Inc.'s list or by checking out these businesses in Fayette County.
