If you’re anything like us, you need a reminder to get real — a Real ID, that is.

Winter weather has many of us dreaming of summer, sun + sand. But before you head to Blue Grass Airport, check your ID.

Beginning May 7, Kentucky residents will require a Real ID compliant driver’s license, permit, or state-issued identification to board domestic flights. Identifications featuring the Real ID black star will also be required to access military bases + other federal facilities like the White House.

The necessary documentation required for a Real ID application includes:

  • Proof of identity — Think: birth certificate, passport, or citizenship documents
  • Social Security number
  • Proof of residency
  • Documentation of any name changes

Lexingtonians can upgrade to a Real ID at any of Kentucky’s regional licensing offices. Pro tip: Pack your spectacles because an eye exam is now required to renew your license .
