To say that this week has been a big week for basketball in Lexington is an understatement. Here’s a quick recap —
- Lexington was voted the No.3 Best City for College Basketball Fans by WalletHub.
- The No. 7 Wildcats shocked the country and defeated the No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks with a dramatic 3-point point shot — making them the 2022 SEC champions.
- The UK men’s team is kicking off SEC tournament play tonight in Tampa.
- Transylvania’s women’s basketball team is this year’s HCAC champions, coach Juli Fulks is coach of the year, and the team is competing at home tonight in the 2022 NCAA Division III sectional championship.
- This weekend, Rupp Arena is playing host to the KHSAA Girls’ Sweet Sixteen tournament.
- Also, Governor Andy Beshear signed Senate Bill 6, allowing college athletes across the state to be compensated for their name, image, and likeness — NIL.
Holy moly.
Lexington clearly knows how to put the ball in the hoop. But looking back at 2021-22, it’s evident that our city isn’t just a basketball town. Lexington is a sports town.
