🧠 Inside Lexington’s psychology

What does geopsychology say about a city’s personality?

Does where we live have any bearing on our personalities? A growing field of psychological research called geopsychology says “yes.”

According to geopsychology, those from Lexington, KY are likely more extroverted than their friends across the nation in, say, Sacramento, CA. And while you may have heard about that good ol’ southern charm, now there may be a form of scientific proof to back it up.

What is it?

ResearchGate defines geopsychology as “the relationship between the complex matrix of static and time-varying geophysical and geochemical variables within a locality and human behavior.”

In other words, there’s a correlation between one’s geophysical space and one’s mind. In particular, research on the “Big Five” traits — conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness, and extroversion — has led researchers to create a set of personality maps for the US.

Conscientiousness

Here in Lexington, we tend to be more conscientious. As an efficient, organized group, it’s no surprise that we have so many thriving and exciting industries.

Agreeableness

According to the map, Lexington is full of compassionate, friendly folk, and we can’t help but agree. New to town? As your friendly local newsletter, allow us to present you with our how-to for new residents.

Neuroticism

In Lexington, we tend to experience a bit less emotional stability and may be more stressed, nervous, or sensitive. Check out our recent wellness edition on ways to relieve stress. Wanna lean into it? We’ve rounded up the best places to cry in Lexington.

Extroversion

We’re the life of the party here in Lexington. As a city of extroverts, we love getting out and about, and we’ve got your back here at LEXtoday: Check out our events page for all kinds of things to do around town each week.

Did you know that Lexington helped some of the nation’s most historic figures find their footing? Let’s meet some historical sites you can visit for Presidents Day.

Henry Clay Monument

Located to the right of the cemetery entrance, the 120-ft-tall stone monument is hard to miss. You can see him towering over the trees if you’re at the stoplight of Main Street + Newtown Pike.

Here, visitors can learn more about Clay’s background as one of the nation’s founding fathers and his aspirations of one day becoming president, a race that he would lose three times.

John C. Breckinridge Gravesite

Also a fellow Lexingtonian, John C. Breckinridge is most known for his role as US Vice President to James Buchanan from 1857 to 1861. Fun fact: Breckinridge was the youngest VP to serve during his time in office.

I spent the weekend celebrating my niece’s 4th birthday with all the bells and whistles: a cake from Martine’s Pastries, skee-ball at Malibu Jack’s, and of course, a dance party featuring her favorite song.
