UK’s Office of Sustainability is making updates to its new sustainability goals, and it wants your feedback on how it can become a cleaner + greener campus.
These new additions to the strategic plan will build upon the goals and accomplishments from the 2018-2022 Sustainability Strategic Plan. The university is aiming to set goals that it can accomplish by 2030.
UK
To generate some ideas, let’s take a look at what UK has accomplished since the implementation of its first Sustainability Strategic Plan in 2018:
- Launching a waste composting program on campus that produces soil amendment for university farms + landscaping.
- Earned gold level status as a bicycle-friendly campus
- Recycling + reusing more than 40% of campus waste
- Now spending ~$2 million on local food.
- Purchasing one-third of its power from a Kentucky-based solar development.
If you have ideas on how the university can continue its sustainability growth, be sure and let it know.
Editor’s Choice: I’d love to see the city + UK work together to improve public transportation between downtown and campus.
Lexington
But UK isn’t the only entity working to go green. Our city has also made serious strides to improve its carbon footprint:
- The yellow paper bins program launched in January of 2020 + the city will soon resume curbside recycling
- The city has pledged that 100% of residents will live within a 10-minute walk of a park or greenspace by 2050
- The plant by numbers program helps citizens create low-maintenance pollinator-friendly landscaping.
- Lexington has established its Green Check Program that provides local businesses with resources to become more sustainable.
