We’ve talked about the new requirements + the Real ID deadline (reminder, it’s Wednesday, May 7), but thanks to some firsthand experience, we discovered three things about renewing your license that the state website can’t tell you.

1. Skip the line

The first step is to find an office and double check if they accept walk-ins. When you arrive, don’t just join the line, use your smartphone to scan the QR code near the front door to sign in + get a ticket number.

After entering your name, phone number, and purpose for visit, you’ll be prompted to return to your car + wait for a notification. When its your turn, you’ll receive a desk number to report to.

2. Keep your eyes open

If you are renewing your license or applying for a Real ID, residents now need to pass a vision screening. Pack your glasses or wear your contacts, and ask if you can join the line for a free vision screening while you wait for your number to be called.

3. Double down

Instead of getting a typical four year renewal, you can double the amount of time you won’t spend waiting in line by purchasing an eight year renewal for anywhere from $28-58, depending on your credential.

All told, it took Sam ~90 minutes to log in, be sorted, pass a vision test, present his documents for review, take a photo, get approved + receive a temporary license while he waits for his Real ID to arrive in the mail.
