Sourdough can blur the line between art and food.

Starter your engines. Sourdough is soaring in popularity, even more than it was in 2020, according to Google Trends, and so is interest in making your own.

If you’re among those baking some new habits into your life via flour and yeast, here are a few ways to get in on the action in Lexington:

  • Keep your eyes peeled for classes hosted by UK’s Fayette County Extension Office. The fine folks at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment are ready to starter you on your way to baking excellence.
  • Why not make a day of it with a little trip up the road to the quaint city of Butler? The renowned Kentucky Millstone not only serves up tasty eats + treats, but also has three-hour sourdough classes for groups of up to six.

For those who prefer their loaves made by an expert, there’s a bunch of spots around town to get your fill of doughy goodness. We’re fans of Wild Lab Bakery’s naturally leavened sourdough, Kentucky Native Cafe’s sister shop — Bread and Roses Bakery, the daily European-inspired breads at the family-owned Bluegrass Baking Company, and the options at either DV8 location.

Pro tip: If you’re picking up treats at any of Lexington’s bakeries, from our experience, the apron-laden are typically willing to offer some friendly advice for beginner bakers eager to learn more.
