Lexington just got a new addition to Martin Luther King Park — a futsal court.

Futsal? What’s that?” you say.

If you’re unclear about what futsal is — don’t fret. We’re breaking down what futsal is + letting you know how you can get involved.

What is Futsal?

Futsal is a soccer-based game that’s growing rapidly in popularity in the US. It’s essentially mini-soccer that’s played on a court — not grass — and uses a smaller sized ball.

The main focus of futsal is to promote skill development + technique. Playing on a hard court + using a smaller ball forces players to focus on their ball control and footwork.

Futsal History

Futsal has been around for 50+ years, and is utilized by soccer club powerhouses like Brazil, Germany + France for skill development and training. Just like soccer a few years ago — futsal is finally starting to gain traction in the US.

The fact that Lexington now has 5 free public courts means we are ahead of the curve. You can dribble over to these courts at:

  • Valley Park
  • Castlewood Park
  • Martin Luther King Park

Futsal + Lexington

Lexington is getting its first pro soccer team in 2023 + there is a local futsal league that had 85 teams participate last winter.

One of the main reasons this new court came about was because students in the Winburn community reached out to their teachers about a “lack of access to play soccer.

Get Involved

Registration is open for session two of the Lexington Futsal League’s winter league — Jan. 7-Feb.13.

The Lexington Futsal Facebook group hosts weekly pickup games — usually at Coolavin Park.

Lexington’s futsal courts are free + open to the public. No reservation required.
