Just two seasons after kicking on to the local sports scene, the Lexington Sporting Club is already climbing up in the leagues. This week, the team announced that it would be joining the USL Championship for the 2025 season — aka the only Division II league recognized by the US Soccer Federation.

So what does that mean? The USL Championship league sits just under Major League Soccer and features soccer clubs from all over the country, including our neighbors at LouCity Football Club.

Starting in 2025, the team will already be settled into the new $80 million soccer stadium off Athens Boonesboro Road, which can seat 7,500 fans when it opens this September. According to the press release, the stadium helped elevate Lexington SC to this new league.

The stadium’s first game will be played by the women’s USL Super League on Saturday, Sept. 8, while the men’s Division III USL League One will play for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 14. Tickets are available.
